The Netherlands is exploring bookable transport for underserved regions. Europe’s auto industry wants revised charging rules to improve coverage and usability.

Dutch government announces plan for bookable transport in areas with limited transit

The Dutch government has announced a plan to improve regional accessibility, although many elements are still being explored or developed. In areas with limited scheduled transit, it wants to examine with regional authorities how passengers could book a minibus or taxi from early morning until late evening. Public transport, flexible services and transport for specific groups could be combined. Projects already operate in seven regions, including a flexible service in Zeeland.

This could narrow the traditional divide between a fixed bus route and an individual taxi trip. For residents without a car, the practical test is whether one network also provides evening access to work, healthcare and education. National availability and implementation have not yet been determined; the existing regional projects mainly provide experience for the announced plan.

Auto industry proposes broader, easier-to-use European charging rules

ACEA proposes strengthening the EU’s alternative-fuels infrastructure rules during their 2026 review. For cars and vans, the industry association wants wider charging coverage in rural and densely populated areas, alongside clearer pricing, better information and easier access. This is an industry proposal, not adopted or implemented policy.

For electric drivers, this shifts the discussion beyond charger numbers to whether the network is genuinely usable. It is not yet certain whether the EU review will adopt these proposals.
